Ottaway Landing

What’s Growing

Ottaway Landing isn’t finished.

We hope it never is.

There are forty acres here.

We have no interest in filling every one of them.

We want to grow slowly enough to discover what belongs.

A treehouse, maybe.

A tiny cabin tucked somewhere it almost shouldn’t be.

A canvas tent with a ridiculous bed.

A greenhouse full of dinner.

A sauna in the woods.

A cold plunge under the sky.

A little structure beside the river whose entire purpose is to give you somewhere to sit.

Some things we already know.

Some things haven’t occurred to us yet.

That’s the fun part.

A winding dirt path through a field of goldenrod wildflowers toward a treeline under a bright sky

No two places the same.

We’re not interested in rows of identical cabins or one beautiful idea copied until it becomes infrastructure.

We imagine each place having its own character.

Its own relationship to the land.

Its own reason for being there.

Maybe you climb to one.

Maybe you follow a path to another.

Maybe one belongs to winter.

Maybe another only makes sense when it’s raining.

Maybe one has a bathtub outside.

We’re leaving room to find out.

Every place has a threshold.

Something that says: now you are here.

This part we know.

Every dwelling and gathering place we add will have its own threshold.

A gate.

An archway.

A bridge.

A path through tall grass.

A door in the trees.

Something that marks the movement from one place into another.

Because places can help us arrive.

You cross it.

Whatever happens next belongs to you.

A field of pink and white cosmos in bloom among feathery green stems

The Garden gets a vote.

We could draw a master plan. We’d rather have a conversation.

With the land.

With the seasons.

With what people need.

With what becomes possible.

With what makes us laugh when somebody says it out loud.

So Ottaway Landing will grow slowly.

Not because we lack imagination.

Because we don’t believe every good idea needs to be built.

We want each addition to feel less like something we put on the land and more like something that belongs there.

And then there’s what happens here.

The buildings are only half the story.

Residencies.

Weddings.

Retreats.

Long-table dinners that go dark before anyone notices.

House shows where everybody ends up singing.

Music tucked into the woods.

Workshops.

Tiny concerts.

Big celebrations.

Artists making strange things.

Kids running everywhere.

People dancing barefoot.

And pool parties in January.

Yes, January.

The pool is heated.

We see absolutely no reason there shouldn’t be volleyball in a snowstorm.

We dream about winter differently here.

Fire and water.

Sauna and snow.

Cold cheeks and hot drinks.

A place that doesn’t close when Northern Michigan gets quiet.

It becomes something else.

A winter respite.

A summer riot.

A spring thaw.

An autumn table.

The lawn, the deck, and the pool in the late afternoon

Some of it will be public.

Some of it won’t.

Some things might happen once.

Others may become traditions.

There may be music. Dinners. Gatherings. Things we don’t have words for yet.

There may be a Tuesday night when twelve people are sitting around a fire and somebody pulls out a guitar and, somehow, that’s the whole event.

We’re interested in all of it.

We don’t want to preserve this place by keeping it untouched.

We want it to be lived with.

We’re growing a Garden.

Not a resort. Not a campus.

Not an inventory of rentable units.

A Garden.

Which means there will be seasons.

Experiments.

Things that flourish.

Things we change.

Things we thought were brilliant that the soil politely declines.

And things that arrive easily because the conditions were right.

We’re not building toward finished.

We’re growing toward alive.

Cedars leaning over the river, a sandy path running along the bank in dappled light

Residency

We’re growing a residency program at Ottaway Landing — offering people time, space, and care to simply reside.

Our first residency will be for mothers, with room, meals, childcare support, and the spaciousness to be here without having to produce anything in return.

We’re currently gathering the patronage that will make it possible.

Patron the Residency

Stay close.

We’ll share what takes root as it takes root.

New places to stay.

New ways to gather.

Things we’re building.

Things we’re dreaming.

Things the Garden said yes to.

That’s what’s growing.
